Household Move Budget

A household move is more than the mover's bill. This tool sums the move itself, packing materials, storage, travel/lodging, utility deposits, and a contingency into a single planning budget you can take to vendors.

How this is calculated

Core move (local or long-distance) plus packing materials, storage, travel/lodging, utility deposits, and move-out cleaning — each a model-based estimate — then a single program contingency. The core move uses the same engine as the standalone Local and Long-Distance calculators, so the numbers never diverge.

Computed with the same model as the calculator above — not hand-written. Your own inputs will differ.

Formula & data sources

Core move = Local or Long-Distance estimate (home size, region, COL)
+ Packing materials (by home size, flat national band)
+ Storage (monthly band × months, if any)
+ Travel & lodging (long-distance only)
+ Utility connection deposits + move-out cleaning (your inputs)
Program total = Σ lines + contingency (%)

When to use this calculator

  • Use this to size the TRUE cost of a household move before collecting vendor bids.
  • Moving within the same state? Keep move type Local; the core move bills by the hour.
  • Crossing state lines? Switch to Long-distance and include travel & lodging.

Frequently asked questions

Why a separate budget tool?

Most people under-budget because they forget packing materials, storage, deposits, and travel. One view catches the add-ons the mover's quote omits.

Do the packing-material numbers include labor?

No. This line is materials only. Professional packing labor is a separate option in the Local calculator if you want it modeled too.

How is storage priced?

A national self-storage monthly band (~$100–$300 for a 10x10 equivalent) multiplied by the number of months — portable and full-service storage run higher.

Are utility deposits always required?

No — many providers waive deposits with good credit. Enter the figure you expect, or 0 if you know they are waived.

Is this a quote?

No. It is a planning budget from public benchmarks; convert to firm written estimates after you know your exact access, inventory, and dates.
