Business License & Address Change Guide
Moving changes where your entity is registered, taxed, and licensed. Miss one and you risk penalties or a lapse in authority to operate.
What to update
| Item | Agency | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Secretary of State entity record | State Secretary of State | Update principal address; some states require a domestic Qualified (QSS) or foreign qualification update. |
| State tax / withholding registration | State Department of Revenue / Taxation | Update address and any nexus; sales-tax permit if you sell into the new state. |
| Local business license | City / county clerk or license office | Re-issue or transfer the local business license for the new location. |
| Professional / occupational licenses | State licensing board(s) | Verify each licensed professional's ability to practice from the new state. |
| Unemployment / workforce account | State Department of Labor | Update the employer account and reporting address. |
| Utilities, bank, insurance, USPS | Private providers | Transfer or open accounts; file a change-of-address with USPS and update EIN-linked records. |
Cross-state vs within-state
A cross-state move usually triggers foreign qualification (registering to do business in the new state) and new tax registration; a within-state move is mostly an address update. See the state guides for per-state regulation context, and always confirm exact requirements with the official agency — ReloFig frames the checklist, it does not replace the filing.
Update licenses and tax accounts before the move date, not after. A gap can suspend your authority to operate or trigger penalties.
